Top 10+ Ways to Keep Your Pet Safe During Fireworks

(Plus a few new tricks worth trying!)

Every year around the 4th of July and New Year’s Eve, we hear from concerned pet owners whose animals struggle with the booms and bangs of fireworks. While fireworks are illegal in the Anchorage Bowl, they’re still used in surrounding areas. Social media fills with posts from worried pet owners and veterans asking others to skip the blasts, but every year, the noise still comes.

That’s why proactive planning is your best defense. Whether you’ve got a noise-sensitive pup or a stressed-out cat, here are some tried-and-true strategies—along with a few additional tips—to help your furry friends stay calm and safe.

1. Get Out of Dodge

One of the smartest moves? Leave the noise behind. State and federal campgrounds in Alaska still ban fireworks, making them perfect retreats for pet owners. Bonus: it’s prime camping season! Even a drive to a quieter area can help—just make sure your pet stays safely in the vehicle.

2. Use Your Split-Entry Superpower

Split-entry homes (and many apartments) are common in Alaska, and they can actually help during fireworks. Head downstairs—below-grade rooms naturally muffle sound, giving your pet a quieter place to ride out the chaos.

3. Soundproof as Best You Can

Close all windows, blinds, and curtains, and check your fireplace damper to reduce noise transmission. Every bit of sound dampening helps. If your home has a central room or closet, that can be an excellent quiet zone.

4. Safe Spaces Save the Day

Some pets instinctively hide during fireworks. Let them. Dogs might retreat to the shower stall or their crate, and cats might vanish under beds or into closets. Create cozy, dark spots with bedding and blankets where they can feel secure.

5. Talk to Your Vet (Early!)

Medication can make a big difference for highly anxious animals. Talk to your vet well in advance—appointments fill quickly before holidays. There are new calming medications on the market in 2025, and your vet can help choose the right fit for your pet’s needs.

6. Try an Anxiety Vest or DIY Wrap

Anxiety wraps like ThunderShirts can help some pets feel grounded. They mimic the calming effect of swaddling. Not into buying one? Make your own with a scarf using these easy instructions

7. Exercise Early and Often

A well-exercised pet is often a calmer pet. Plan long walks or hikes earlier in the day to tire them out before the fireworks begin. Cooler temperatures this summer make it a great time for outdoor adventures—just be sure to leash up.

8. Mask the Noise

Create a “sound cocoon” by playing calming music, ambient nature sounds, or even white noise machines. Many pets respond well to classical or soft instrumental music. Some apps now offer pet-specific calming playlists—check out Spotify’s pet features or Pet Acoustics. Try “MyPetCalm” or “SootheSound” (popular apps this year) for customizable soundscapes designed to mask fireworks and thunder.

9. Keep Pets Secure—Indoors Only

Too many pets go missing around July 4th. Make it a house rule: no pets outside during fireworks. Always use a leash for potty breaks, and double-check fences and gates if you have a yard. Make sure your pet’s microchip info is up to date, just in case.

10. Distract with High-Value Treats

Frozen Kongs, puzzle feeders, or a special chew can keep dogs focused on something delicious instead of the noise. For cats, try a favorite toy or a catnip kicker.

11. (Bonus!) Calming Scents and Tech

Pet-safe pheromone diffusers (like Adaptil for dogs or Feliway for cats) are now more affordable and widely available. Newer calming collars and scent sprays can also help ease your pet’s stress response during noisy events. Look for options at your local pet store or vet office.

What works for your pet?

These tips can make a big difference, but every pet is unique. Share your go-to strategies in the comments—we’d love to hear what’s helped your furry family stay safe during fireworks.
