If you've ever adopted a pet, visited a veterinarian, volunteered for a rescue, purchased

supplies from a local pet store, or donated to an animal shelter, you've already been part of Alaska's animal welfare community. What many people don't realize is that there isn't one organization responsible for helping Alaska's pets.

There is an entire ecosystem.

Every day, veterinarians diagnose illness, perform surgery, and keep pets healthy. Shelters provide safe refuge for animals in need. Rescue organizations open foster homes and create second chances. Trainers help families solve behavioral challenges. Pet supply businesses, groomers, volunteers, donors, and community organizations all contribute in meaningful ways. Each serves a different purpose. Each brings unique expertise. Together, they create something no single organization could accomplish alone.

At Alaska PAWS, we believe pets and the people who love them belong at the center of

that ecosystem.

Different roles. Shared purpose.

For many years, conversations about animal welfare have sometimes focused on

differences between organizations. We think a better question is: How can we help each

other help more animals?

That philosophy is why we renamed our organization Alaska Partners for Animal Welfare & Safety. Partnership isn't just part of our name. It's our strategy. While some organizations specialize in rescue, foster care, or adoption, Alaska PAWS provides a broader combination of services designed to strengthen the entire system:

• Veterinary care

• Spay and neuter services

• Shelter and placement

• Community-based services that meet people where they are

Those services don't replace the work of rescues or private veterinarians. They

complement it.

Choosing organizations that share your values.

Whether you're adopting a pet, donating to a rescue, volunteering, or seeking veterinary

care, it's worth asking a few questions.

• Does this organization put animal welfare first?

• Do they seek veterinary care when animals are sick or injured?

• Are they transparent and accountable?

• Do they work collaboratively with others?

• Do they communicate professionally—even when they disagree?

These questions matter because good animal welfare isn't measured by the loudest voice on social media. It's measured by the quality of care animals receive every day.

The Alaska PAWS Partner Network was created to recognize organizations committed to

those principles. Network Partners agree to standards for humane care, timely veterinary treatment, ethical placement practices, responsible transportation, organizational integrity, and professional collaboration.

The Alaska PAWS Partner Network brings together organizations that share a commitment to collaboration, education, advocacy, improved access to veterinary care, and ethical organizational practices. Members receive practical benefits—including improved access to veterinary services, outreach clinic opportunities, educational resources, leadership development, policy support, and opportunities to work together on issues affecting animal welfare across Alaska.
