Adoption Center is closing
Recently, the Alaska SPCA Adoption Center experienced a gas leak that threatened the safety of rescued cats and dogs that reside there. Thankfully, no person, cat or dog was injured during this incident, but it was a wake-up call that this facility had outlived its useful life and could endanger the people and animals. With this in mind, the Alaska SPCA board of directors came to the difficult decision that we must close the shelter for the safety of all, and suspend our rescue program until we review our shelter options.

For the next several weeks, we will work diligently to find safe and secure housing options for every animal under our shelter care and will continue to serve our mission -- to reduce the suffering of Alaska’s cats and dogs. This includes strengthening our other successful programs like our spay/neuter programs, clinic services, humane education, and public advocacy.

If you are able help us find homes for the cats and dogs at the Adoption Center, or would like to talk to someone about our decision, please call Nicki McCullough, board president, at 907-336-1717, or Maureen O'Nell, executive director, at 907-575-3144. You may also send an email to monell.spca@alaska.net, or write to Alaska SPCA, 549 W. Int’l Airport Rd., Suite B-2, Anchorage, AK 99518.

The board of directors, executive director, staff and volunteers of the Alaska SPCA are deeply committed to reducing the suffering of Alaska's dogs and cats. We thank you for your continued support of our programs -- and most importantly, support of our mission.

Buy-1 Get-1 Free Cats
With our "Pairs Program," we pay the adoption fee of one cat when a long-term pair of cats at AAC&CC is adopted together to the same home. Contact us for details.

Our goal -- even without a building
We are dedicated to the successful and lifetime placement of our animals with loving homes. A new pet is a lifelong commitment. We take that commitment seriously, and we expect our adoption families to take it seriously too. We make every effort to find the right home for each animal, so when you apply for one of our animals, please be prepared to complete a thorough application, personal interview, and provide references.

Adoption process
We implement a thorough application-screening process with a mandatory 24-hour waiting period. If approved, you start a 10-day trial adoption. If the trial period goes well, and you decide to adopt your new family member, you will return to the Adoption Center to finalize the process.

Adopting a shelter animal
These are sheltered, homeless animals that are not always perfect in every way. They may need extra time to adjust or have unforeseen behavioral or medical problems. While we strive for successful placement by providing as healthy, well-socialized animals as possible, we can only provide any history we have received, collected, or observed from staff or volunteers during their stay.

Why is there an adoption fee?
We must be able to cover the costs involved in caring for the animals we house. These costs include feeding, exams, vaccinations, medications, licensing, spaying or neutering, processing, and regular shelter maintenance. We depend on these adoption fees and donations to cover these costs. If a relatively small adoption fee causes the prospective pet owner concern, then he or she very well may not be prepared to make the financial commitment required of responsible pet owners.

U.S. Shelter Facts
An estimated 4-7 million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized in the United States each yearat least twice as many enter shelters.
The top 5 reasons animals end up in a shelter are:
1. Moving
2. Rental manager/owner doesn't allow pets
3. Personal/financial problems, allergies, divorce, not enough
time, or job change.
4. Too many animals
5. Cost
